What people use CSV.ink for

Opening CSV exports correctly

Bank statements, CRM exports and analytics reports often open in Excel as one long column or with broken characters. Converting them to XLSX puts every value in its own cell and keeps accents and non-Latin text intact.

Preparing data for developers

Turn a spreadsheet into JSON for an API mock or a web app, generate SQL INSERT statements to seed a database, or convert an API's JSON response back into a table you can review.

Importing contacts

Convert a contact list from a CSV export into a single vCard (.vcf) file and import it into iPhone, Android, Google Contacts or Outlook in one step.

Product feeds and catalogs

Move product data between shop systems, marketplaces and suppliers that expect CSV, XML or Excel files, without installing desktop software.

Reports and documentation

Turn a CSV into a clean HTML table for a website or email, a Markdown table for a README, or a print-ready PDF for a meeting.

Quick checks on any device

Look inside a CSV or TSV file on a computer without Excel, such as a Chromebook or a work laptop where you can't install software.

What is a CSV file?

CSV stands for comma-separated values. It is a plain-text format for tables: each line is a row, and the values in a row are separated by a delimiter, usually a comma. The first line normally holds the column names.

Because CSV is just text, almost every program can read and write it, from Excel and Google Sheets to databases, accounting software and programming languages. That makes it the most common format for exporting and exchanging data. The trade-off is that a CSV file stores no formatting, formulas or data types, and different programs make slightly different assumptions about delimiters and encoding.

Common CSV problems and how to fix them

All data in one column

The file uses a different delimiter than your spreadsheet expects, often a semicolon. Convert it to Excel and choose the right delimiter.

Garbled characters

The file was saved in a legacy encoding instead of UTF-8. Re-save it as CSV UTF-8, or convert it to XLSX so the encoding no longer matters.

Open the converter

Leading zeros disappear

Spreadsheets treat ZIP codes and IDs like 00123 as numbers. Our converters keep values with leading zeros as text.

Open the converter

Commas inside values

Values such as "Smith, John" must be wrapped in double quotes. All tools on CSV.ink read and write quoted fields according to RFC 4180.

Frequently asked questions

Is CSV.ink free?

Yes. All tools are free to use without registration. There are no watermarks and no limits on the number of conversions.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your files are read and processed locally in your browser. They are not sent to or stored on our servers, so your data stays private.

How large a file can I open?

The limit depends on your device's memory rather than on our servers. Files of tens of megabytes usually work well on a modern computer; very large files may take longer to process.

How do I open a CSV file without Excel?

Drag the file onto the upload box at the top of this page. It opens in the online editor, where you can sort, filter and edit the data and download it again as CSV.

Which delimiters are supported?

Comma, semicolon, tab and pipe. Most converters let you choose the delimiter, which helps with European CSV files that use semicolons.

How are values that contain commas handled?

According to the CSV standard (RFC 4180), such values are wrapped in double quotes, for example "Smith, John". All tools read and write quoted values correctly, including line breaks inside a value.

What is the difference between CSV and TSV?

Both are plain-text tables. CSV separates values with commas, TSV with tab characters. TSV is common when data is copied from a spreadsheet, because values rarely contain tabs. Use the TSV tools to view TSV files or convert them to CSV or Excel.

Does CSV.ink work on mobile?

Yes. The tools run in mobile browsers on iOS and Android. For large files and editing, a computer is more comfortable.
